Turn a walk into a sensory treasure hunt and collect goodies to later make a Treasure Tree. It is free, fun and will keep busy brains buzzing for a good few hours.
All you need is a box to collect your treasures, our prompts below and BOOM – away you go! Any box will do so have a rummage through that recycling.
Adventure Walking Activity Explained
Are you ready for an adventure treasure hunt? We are going to go for a walk and collect treasures along the way. These might be leaves, flowers, stones, funny looking sticks – whatever is treasure to you. Later on we are going to use them to make Treasure Trees. To help us find the very best treasure we need to use all our senses so here are some treasure boosting tips and questions for you along the way.
Important safety notes for the grown-ups
- LOOK but don’t TOUCH – make sure you explain before you get cracking that we can use our eyeballs to LOOK at everything in nature but there are things in nature that we don’t TOUCH like spiky plants, stingy plants, animals and berries.
- A close eye – this treasure hunt is a collecting activity so keep a close eye to ensure your adventurers are only collecting things they find on the ground like stones, sticks, leaves, flowers and petals that have fallen from safe plants already.
Sensory Prompts
Here are some questions to chat about on your adventure...
- Kids Question – What can you see? Look up at the sky, down on the ground, find something moving, find something still.
- Kids Question - What can you hear and smell? Close your eyes and listen. What can you hear? Are there big noises, small ones, high-pitched ones, rumbling ones? What you can smell? Are there some beautiful flowers? Has someone cut the grass? Is there is field of stinky cows near you?
- Kids Question - What can you feel? What can you feel? Is there grass? Does it feel tickly? Are there any flowers? Are their petals silky-soft? Are there hard materials, soft, warm or cool?
